MENTORING AND GUIDANCE FOR INVICTA MEMBERS
Over recent seasons Invicta FFC has organised Improvers’ Days to provide the opportunity for members to fish with a club ‘expert’ to learn from their approach. These were sociable outings and enjoyed by all who took part. They were difficult to organise as everyone has busy diaries.
Invicta’s committee feel it is time for a more permanent arrangement, specifically to serve and encourage new members.
A MENTORING SCHEME
The mentors listed below have volunteered to provide free, personal help and guidance to Invicta members.
Anyone interested should contact the mentor of their choice, discuss their need, and arrange to fish together at their chosen venue. Usually, the mentor will pay for the boat and, if necessary for their own permit and reclaim this cost from the club. New members are expected to pay only for their own day ticket. They are permitted to claim two such outings in their first two years of membership. They may want to enjoy fishing different waters, a bank and boat trip or at different times of year.
Alternatively, new members could request to enjoy a day with a chosen mentor on a club outing once or twice during their first two years of membership. They would book and pay their slot as normal through Clubmate, then inform the Booking Officer of their request. The club would then reimburse the cost of the boat booked to both the mentor and new member.
One purpose of this scheme is to encourage new members to take an active part in club events. When information on this scheme is publicised, it may also encourage beginners to become members and enhance Invicta’s reputation as the ‘friendly fishing club’.
MENTORS
- Allan Sefton – Allan was a professional, licensed Level Two Angling and Fly-Casting Coach. He is the author of several books. He is happy to help new members ‘get started’ and to have a spell fishing together. He is also happy to provide fly casting tuition to all (not just new members) on request, perhaps to learn a new style or when recovering from an injury.
Phone 07850 759751 - David Moore – David is an experienced fly-fisher who actively encourages Invicta members to take part in competitions for the first time. He organises Invicta’s participation the Association of Major Fly-Fishing Clubs events.
Phone 07874372810 - Sue Potts – Sue took up fly fishing (alongside husband Neil) only a few years ago so she understands the problems of ‘getting started’. She is now an active Invicta member who enjoys fishing with a competitive edge. She is pleased to see women are taking up fly- fishing and is keen to encourage more to join in.
Phone 07880 505841 - Alan Briggs – Alan is a lifetime fly-fisher with passion for traditional ‘loch-style’ boat fishing. He also spends lots of time bank fishing on Grafham Water and is happy to share his expertise.
Phone 07939 124504 - Chris McLeod – Chris believes fishing should be fun! He has many years of experience fishing all the Midlands’ reservoirs from both boat and bank. He’s a great teacher.

FEEDBACK PLEASE
Invicta FFC is keen to enhance its reputation as the friendly club. No other local club offers subsidised mentoring for new members. (A day out with a professional guide costs hundreds of pounds!). If you take up this offer, please let a committee member know if it was a success. We also hope all members continue to encourage others to join us. Our mentoring offer may be an incentive.
